Which type of membership is best for me and what are the differences between them?

Supporting Member : This membership is reserved for individuals who support the AQD's mission and wish to contribute to the promotion of doula practice. This includes those who are not yet trained, who are on maternity leave, or who do not meet the criteria for regular membership. If you are not in Quebec, this membership allows you to be part of the community and access training at reduced rates or free of charge. Note: Businesses, associations, or organizations cannot join as supporting members. This membership is for individuals only.Student Member : You have completed the theoretical part of your training and are looking for an internship, or you have your degree but have not yet completed the 4 required placements. You have access to almost all the benefits, except for voting rights and insurance, which are reserved for regular members.Regular Member : You have graduated, completed your internships, and carried out four mentoring sessions. You are actively practicing full-time or part-time. This membership gives you access to all the services and benefits offered by the AQD.Member Organization : Community organizations that employ doulas can become members. Their doulas benefit from training, partner discounts, and community opportunities, but do not have access to insurance because their certifications are not validated. The organization has three votes at general meetings.

When should I renew?

Accepted Answer

Membership is valid for one year. At the end of this period, you can choose to renew or terminate it easily. A 30-day grace period is possible, but after this period, the profile will be deactivated and the member will lose their privileges.Example: I join on June 1, 2025. My membership is valid for 1 year. So I will have to renew on May 31, 2026. If I don't renew by July 1, 2026, my profile will be deactivated and I will lose my membership privileges.

Can I become a member if I am a doula in another country?

Yes, you can become a supporting member. This allows you to be part of our community, access training at reduced rates, and support the AQD's mission, even if you don't practice in Quebec.

Question 6

I am a doula abroad and I want to immigrate to Canada. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

Currently, only Quebec residents can become regular members. However, you can join as a supporting member, join the community, and benefit from its resources. Once established, you can become a regular member if you meet the criteria.

Does the AQD offer training or recognize certain schools?

We have chosen not to certify any specific schools. Rather, our mission is to help future doulas choose training that aligns with their values, needs, and aspirations. Just as we encourage parents to make an informed choice when choosing their doula, we apply the same philosophy to choosing a training school.We're working on a section dedicated to considerations before embarking on the career path, including tips for making an informed choice about your training. This section will be available soon.Free training is already available for our members, and we plan to offer a variety of training and events in the near future. Can you work as a doula without official certification?

Yes, in Quebec, the doula profession is unregulated, which means it's possible to practice without official certification. However, training is much more than acquiring knowledge: it's about reconnecting with the heart of the doula role and understanding its full depth.At the AQD, we do not seek to regulate or structure the profession as an order, but rather to support doulas in their careers by promoting exchange, resource sharing, and continuing education. The AQD currently has a code of ethics, but it is currently being revised to reflect a more modern and inclusive philosophy of practice. The AQD is run by a dedicated volunteer team within the board of directors. With no physical office or phone line, we operate with flexible hours and complete autonomy.Email is the best way to reach us. Please note that response times may take up to 10 days. It offers you much more than just a listing in the directory: it's a continuous connection to the community, access to training and resources, and a way to stay connected, at your own pace.Here are some options depending on your situation:Temporarily disable your directory profile through your account settings if you wish to take a public break.Maintain your membership to continue enjoying the benefits and keep a foothold in the community.Change your status to Supporting Membership at the time of renewal if you want a lighter package while you are on leave.We're here to support you, no matter what season you're in.
